There’s a moment that sneaks up on you as a parent.
No announcement. No milestone. No “you’ve unlocked the next level” badge.
It just… happens. You realize they don’t need you the same way.
We’re on a family trip right now, and it hit me somewhere between the first coffee of the morning and the sound of… absolutely nothing.
The kids were still asleep. Which, if you have teenagers, is not surprising.
But what stood out wasn’t the quiet. It was what the quiet meant.
They didn’t need us right then.
- Not for breakfast.
- Not to get dressed.
- Not to plan the day.
And if I’m being honest, it’s a bit of a strange feeling at first.
Because it didn’t always look like this.
Travel used to be a full operation.
- You packed everything.
- You planned everything.
- You carried everything.
You were “on” from the moment you woke up.
Now the role changes.
- They carry their own luggage.
- They have opinions.
- They make their own plans.
And gradually, your role shifts from doing everything to being available.
It creates something you haven’t had in a long time: space.
Gen X, it’s Time!
You spend your 30s and early 40s building careers, families, and stability.
Then one day… you look up. And there’s room again. Not to start over. To refocus.
☑ RESP? Dialed in.
☑ University? Largely covered.
Now it’s time to refocus your goals and build momentum.
Momentum doesn’t come from big moves.
It comes from revisiting your plan, adjusting where needed, and aligning your decisions with where you are today.
Making coffee while traveling has become a bit of a ritual for me.
You don’t rush it. You don’t overcomplicate it.
You just do the right things—consistently.
That’s momentum.
Final Thought:
Watching your kids become independent is a signal.
Not just that they’re growing, but that it’s time to refocus your own path.
Gen X, it’s time to refocus your goals and build momentum.
